Beyond Beige: How Adding Colour Can Transform Your Home and Your Wellbeing

Let’s talk about the neutrals-only habit; those endless whites, greys, and beiges that have quietly taken over our homes.

Don’t get me wrong, I love a calming neutral palette. It’s clean, safe, timeless. But when every wall, sofa, rug, and cushion is a shade of oatmeal, things can start to feel… flat. Emotionally and energetically.

Here’s the truth: your home isn’t just a place to decorate, it’s a place to feel. And colour has the power to shift the entire vibe of your space and your state of mind.

Why Neutrals Became the Default

We often reach for neutrals because they’re seen as “safe” and “sophisticated.” They don’t offend the eye or date quickly. But over time, a strictly neutral environment can start to feel emotionally muted.

In fact, a 2020 study published in Color Research & Application found that environments with higher chromatic richness (i.e., colour!) led to more positive emotional responses and greater perceived comfort compared to neutral spaces.

Translation? Colour feels better, literally.

What Colour Adds (That Neutrals Can’t)

Colour stimulates the brain. It can energise us in the morning, calm us in the evening, and spark joy throughout the day.

•           Greens reduce anxiety and promote mental restoration.

•           Blues are linked to calmness and focus.

•           Yellows and peaches uplift mood and can even boost sociability.

•           Pinks and terracottas offer emotional warmth and a sense of comfort.

Colour also helps define a space, so your living room doesn’t feel like your bedroom, and your bedroom doesn’t feel like an extension of your hallway.

How to Break the Neutrals-Only Habit

Here’s how to ease out of the neutral comfort zone without feeling overwhelmed:

1. Start Small

Add colour through artwork, cushions, a bold vase, or even flowers. Let your eyes adjust. Then go bigger with a coloured accent chair or a statement wall.

2. Find Your Emotional Palette

Ask yourself: How do I want to feel in this room? Calm? Uplifted? Grounded? Choose colours that support that emotional goal, not just what’s trending.

3. Draw from Nature

If you’re nervous about going “too bold,” look to nature for inspiration using colours such as mossy greens, ocean blues, sun-baked clays, soft sky pinks. Nature never gets it wrong.

4. Layer with Neutrals

You don’t have to ditch beige or white. Just let colour lead, with neutrals supporting the harmony. This creates a space that feels both alive and balanced.

Colour Isn’t Just Pretty, It’s Preventative Care

A 2022 paper in Building and Environment showed that biophilic, colour-rich environments reduce stress, improve cognitive function, and boost overall wellbeing. And in a world where burnout and anxiety are common, adding colour isn’t indulgent, it’s intelligent.
